Elva -  Infinite Pathway

Since 1995 I have been exploring a project that I call Elva.

Elva is a theoretically infinite painting made up of individual 16” x 12” panels, the base “Units.”

The over-all organizing element is a grid pattern of straight, angled and curved lines, or bands, that I have created with the help of a computer architectural drafting program.  If printed full size this schematic drawing would currently extend several miles in all directions.  This grid is the armature upon which I can explore, and experiment with, my interests in light, shadow, color, texture, architecture, urban environments, stark landscapes, order and chaos.

From this infinite plan I can create finite art.  In practice a painting can be as small as the 16” x 12” unit or any combination of units bolted together.  For example: four units combined can make a painting 32” x 24.”

Many of the titles for the current show at Aucocisco Gallery are derived from random combinations of street names in Bath, Maine, U.S. where I currently reside.  Each of the 16” x 12” units have a random 5 digit numerical title preceded by a letter or letters.
